The English Department understand and value the importance of enriching the English curriculum. Last year we took groups of pupils to the Globe theatre, to the Imperial War Museum, and to a graveyard to inspire their Gothic writing. This year our priority is to take as many pupils as possible to the theatre.
Within school, we enrich our curriculum in several different ways. At the moment our focus is on encouraging reading, and developing independent learning skills. All pupils in year 7 and 8 participate in Accelerated Reader, reading during registration and for twenty minutes during an English lesson. There is a weekly reading club that takes place on a Wednesday lunch-time. Throughout Key stage 3 and 4 pupils get the opportunity to write and deliver speeches and presentations.
We also offer opportunities to develop independent study skills, to ensure that creativity and independence are valued alongside the key skills that pupils need for examinations. At key stage 3 during each holiday, pupils are given a creative homework that they work on independently, often choosing the format of their work. They will build up a portfolio of this work.
Our key stage 3 curriculum is currently being re-written. It is our aim that each unit will have a reading list, with suggestions for wider reading at different levels.
