Welcome to Design & Technology. The study of Design and Technology seeks to prepare students to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world; and be aware of, and learn from, wider influences on design and technology, including historical, social/cultural, environmental and economic factors.

Constructing the Built Environment is a vocationally focused course which will provide students with practical and academic skills. It provides a foundation of knowledge about the construction industry that will help learners progress through to their further study or their journey into entering the workplace.

Designing the Built Environment provides learners with an introduction to the design sector of the construction industry. It develops learner’s drawing skills in the creation of construction plans whilst also helping them integrate their knowledge and understanding of building structures and materials into these drawings.

They will also explore the planning process of construction projects and delve into the topic of planning potential and how this is influenced by design.

Constructing the Built Environment

The course consists of three units: two exams worth 25% each and one practical unit worth 50%.
In Year 10 pupils will cover all theory content for Unit 1 which covers Health & Safety and Site Security.

They will also make a start on their Unit 2 Practical work which consists of demonstrating and writing about different skills: Carpentry and Joinery, Plumbing and Painting and Decorating.

In Year 11 pupils will complete their Unit 2 practical work and cover the theory for Unit 3 which looks at the Construction Industry and Construction Process.

Pupils will be entered into Unit 1 and Unit 3 in both Year 10 and Year 11 (if needed), and the highest grade for each unit will be counted.Pupils must successfully complete all of the units to be awarded the qualification.
